Breast Cancer; daunting words to hear and even more intimidating to process when a loved one reveals they have been diagnosed with cancer. The important thing to remember is that your love and support is needed most at this difficult time. Remember you are not alone and we are all in this together!

Here are a few things you can do and or give to someone close who is dealing with breast cancer.

  • Create happy memories together. It’s easy to let fear over take our minds but now is not the time for fear. Create moments that you and your loved ones can cherish. A fun photo collage can be a great way to spend the day reminiscing about happy days of the past and a great way to envision a positive, healing future! Capture these moments for your future collages too!
  • Be a good listener. Sometimes we forget to just listen; we all have days where we just need to vent. Blow off some steam! And complain about our day without looking for advice but rather to just lend an ear and a hug if needed. Let your loved one voice their fears, their frustrations, and let them show you that vulnerable side of what they are experiencing. Give them your understanding and time, which is one of the greatest gifts you can give!
  • Thoughtful thinking with gifts! A beautiful bouquet of flowers you picked together on a walk is a considerate way to commemorate time well spent. A spontaneous day trip to a destination you’ve both been thinking about visiting is a great escape for a small adventure for two. Shopping dates, sight-seeing, art walks, and sporting events; the opportunities are limitless! Get out there and explore the fun activities offered in your area!
  • Take up a new hobby together! Nothing says fun like getting in to mischief together. Most community colleges offer art classes, cooking classes, yarning/knitting classes, and dancing classes! Get out there and discover, have fun, and have an adventure together learning a new skill or hobby that will enrich both of your lives!
  • Lastly, remind them to take one day at a time. Each and every day is a gift and in these trying times when fear and despair threaten to take over – be their strength. Remind them that you are there for them, they are not alone, and to slow down. Cherish the important things in life and to not sweat the small stuff. Nothing is impossible and there is always hope!
